PETA’s chicken
display, measuring a massive 6 feet tall and 32 feet wide, features
celebrities Russell Simmons, Sir Paul McCartney, Alec Baldwin, and
Pamela Anderson. These compassionate crusaders explain that chickens
are interesting and intelligent animals and highlight how abusively
they’re treated by the chicken industry.
Chickens, who have cognitive abilities equivalent to mammals, including
primates, are not protected from abuses that would warrant felony
charges if inflicted on dogs or cats.
As Alec Baldwin explains on a video that plays on a TV screen during
the exhibit, “Chickens are probably the most abused animals
on the face of the planet … After enduring weeks in filthy,
crowded conditions, the animals are loaded onto trucks and taken
through extreme weather conditions, without food or water, to slaughterhouses—where
they are snapped into shackles by their fragile legs and have their
throats slit, often while still conscious. Many are scalded alive
in the feather removal tanks.”
